Stand, Don’t Sit
Have you heard this catchy phrase, sitting is the new smoking? Prolonged sitting may increase risk for developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Who hasn’t heard a dire health warning and ignored it? Well, researchers are wisely starting to appeal to basic human vanity to make a point. According to Dr. James Levine, an endocrinologist at Mayo Clinic, extended sitting may increase production of fat cells by up to 50 percent, leading to ahem, broader bottoms. Are you paying attention now?
What is any task-driven employer to do? Support walking meetings, offer convertible standing desks, and encourage employees to take a well-deserved lunch break and get off their duffs. And, with a big enough budget and some spare space, install some treadmill desks in common areas for “walking work”.
