In Keller’s January 2014 Bulletin, we included information about New York City’s new Earned Sick Time Act. In March, New York City passed new legislation that expands the Act to include smaller employers.
The Act now states that all employers who employ five or more employees, or at least one domestic worker, must provide paid sick time to their employees in accordance with the Act starting April 1, 2014. If your company employs at least five employees, or one domestic worker, in New York City, you will need to amend your leave policy if it does not already provide at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year. Additionally, employers must provide a Notice of Employee Rights to current covered employees by May 1 and to new employees on their first day.
